Romanza (Romance)

Romanza, also known as Romance Anónimo or Spanish Romance, is one of the most recognized melodies ever written for the guitar, and one of its greatest mysteries. Despite generations of scholarship, nobody knows for certain who composed it. The earliest traceable versions date to the late nineteenth century, and the piece has been attributed at various times to the Spanish guitarist Antonio Rubira, to unnamed South American composers, and even, implausibly, to Fernando Sor. The celebrated Spanish guitarist Narciso Yepes claimed late in life that he had written it as a boy, a claim most scholars discount since versions of the melody circulated decades before his birth. What is beyond dispute is how the piece conquered the world: Yepes performed it as the theme for René Clément's 1952 film Jeux Interdits (Forbidden Games), and the soundtrack made the anonymous romance an international sensation. Musically it is a perfect miniature: an aching E minor melody sung over a continuous triplet arpeggio, answered by a consoling middle section in E major, with the form played AA BB A. The texture, one uninterrupted stream of arpeggios with the melody carried on top and a sustained bass below, has made it the traditional gateway into serious classical guitar playing. As an anonymous nineteenth-century work, it rests firmly in the public domain, free for every guitarist to study, arrange, and perform.

How to Practice This Tab

An advanced performance of Romanza lives or dies on tone and pacing rather than notes, since the notes themselves fall under the fingers naturally after enough repetition. Work on three distinct dynamic layers sounding simultaneously: a singing melody, a whispering accompaniment, and a warm bass line, each with its own contour. Use rubato structurally, leaning into the peaks of phrases and relaxing into cadences, so the piece breathes like a sung romance rather than a metronomic study. Color the E major section differently from the opening, perhaps warmer and nearer the soundhole, so the modulation feels like sunlight after shade. The high positions on the first string invite portamento; use it sparingly, as one tasteful slide says more than five. Above all, resist speed: the piece is marked by longing, and longing takes its time.

About Songs Tabs

Learning complete songs on guitar is one of the most rewarding parts of playing the instrument. Songs bring together chords, melody, rhythm, and musical expression in a way that isolated exercises cannot. Working through a full arrangement teaches you how musical ideas connect and flow, and gives you real pieces you can perform for others or simply enjoy playing on your own.
